Even though it still feels like Summer in Los Angeles, Fall has arrived because pumpkin patches pop into the cityscape and suddenly you’re vacuuming more hay than sand in the car. The iconic Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch in Culver City is the start of Fall festivities for most Angelenos, due to it’s convenient location, fun activities, and the many photo opportunities.
I’ve been to Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch with my family for several years now, as it’s become a fun family tradition. I recently interviewed Lyra Marble, the owner of Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch.
How has Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch changed over the years?
Lyra Marble: Over 30 years, we’ve changed A LOT! Mr. Bones began as a beloved ‘mom and pop pumpkin patch’ and has grown to become LA’s premiere pumpkin patch – what has stayed the same is my mother’s 14 foot handmade Halloween characters that decorate the patch, including our namesake, Mr. Bones. Our newest addition, created in 2014, is the Mr. Bones beautiful one-of-a-kind pumpkin village.
Do you have new activities every year? Are they added or swapped out?
Marble: We have a few of our classic favorites as far as activities go, but there is always exciting new changes to keep your eye out for, along with an ever-changing roster of live entertainment and delicious food trucks. This year, LA’s famous Grilled Cheese Truck will be joining us as well as the California Feetwarmers for live entertainment! One of our recent additions that’s become a firm favorite is the Mr. Bones Super Slide, created exclusively for Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch. The size of our pumpkin village has also expanded; it’s bigger and more beautiful than ever!
What are some fun things families can look forward to this year?
Marble: This year, the patch will feature our famous Pumpkin Village, a boo-tique filled with Halloween favorites, our tipi village, face painting, pumpkin decorating, a VIP area, incredible activities for all ages including multiple bounce houses, pony rides and a petting zoo. For weekends you’ll find food trucks and a robust roster of live entertainment to create magical memories for the whole family. There’s so much to experience!
Last year, it was very hot during the Halloween season. If it’s just as hot this year, will you provide more shade and possibly misters?
Marble: There will be more fans on site this year as well as the addition of misters. We’re working to beat the LA fall heatwaves!
What do you do with all the pumpkins afterwards?
Marble: We donate them to local schools and animal welfare charities.
