Studio Ghibli is most famous in the U.S. for it’s feature film, My Neighbor Totoro, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The adorable racoon/cat/chinchilla/rabbit- looking hybrid Totoro is a “Spirit of the Forest” and made it’s way into hearts of anime fans everywhere. Studio Ghibli Fest 2017 starts tomorrow, June 25th, but “Cute culture” retailer JapanLA started their celebration today with an official Studio Ghibli Pop-Up Shop inside their store on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles, which will stay open for one month (June 24 – July 24, closed on July 4th).
The line
I learned about this event from my good friend Aya, who is a super-fan of Studio Ghibli. She even decorated her daughter’s nursery in a Totoro theme, complete with a hand-made mobile! She arrived very early (6:00am) with a baby in tow and was 30th in line (that’s dedication).
Around 8:30, when I took the pictures below, the line wrapped all way down the block to the residential area.
The Shop
As a member of the press, I was able to get a sneak preview and take photos! I would post more but there is just so much!
