Helpful items for virtual school

So much has happened since school went virtual for Los Angeles Unified School District students in March due to COVID-19. It started off really rocky, with complaints from parents and students alike. Now, almost a month into the Fall semester, my daughter and I have gotten into the groove and are not completely hating it.

What I like about distance-learning:

  • No commute
  • Waking up an hour later than regular school
  • Encourages computer literacy at a young age
  • Opportunities to expand curriculum

What I don’t like about distance-learning:

  • No in-person instruction
  • No real interaction between classmates
  • Easy to zone out
  • Access to sites and other ways to avoid being present
  • Kid’s easy access to me to complain

What’s been helpful

Student Desk with wheels

Adjustable-Height Student Desk/Classroom Desk (Amazon link)

We don’t have the desk pictured above, but we do have a desk that was given to us that is easy to move around. However, if I were to buy a desk for my daughter right now, I would get one with wheels, and is adjustable, and something that she can grow with. When the air quality is better and the weather is nice, I might set her outside for virtual school.

Rolling Utility Cart

3-Tier Metal Mesh Rolling Cart Storage Organizer with Utility Handle and Wheels (Amazon link)

A rolling utility cart has been so helpful to store all of my daughter’s school items. The wheels allow her to easily roll everything she needs wherever she wants to work.

Dry Erase Lapboard

The school supplied us with a dry erase lapboard, a marker and eraser. The kids use it during class to answer math questions and for other quick responses.

School Supply Caddy

mDesign Bamboo Office Storage Organizer Tote Caddy Holder with Handle (Amazon link)

We have a handled caddy to store various school supplies such as: pencils, crayons, highlighters, erasers, markers, and other random things. The handle is for mobility and ease of use. That way, if I need to go somewhere and take her with me, my kid can easily grab it and go. If I wasn’t so obsessed with mobility, I would probably get something like this cute caddy.

Digital Timer

Classroom Timers for Teachers, Kids (Amazon link)

During the course of the day, my kid gets a few breaks. The teacher suggested we get the kids an easy-to-use digital timer so they know what time come back to virtual class.
